Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center – Finland, Minnesota

Facility & Site Asset Management, Living Building Challenge, Forensic Investigation

CR-BPS was hired to develop and implement a sustainable and long-range Facilities and Land Management Plan for Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, Minnesota.   World-renowned, Wolf Ridge is dedicated to developing a citizenry with the knowledge, skills, motivation, and commitment to work together for a quality environment.  To that end, Wolf Ridge is deeply engaged in teaching about and creating an environment that supports the highest levels of sustainability in all aspects of human experience.  CR-BPS is honored to have worked on many projects with Wolf Ridge over the years.

As part of its Strategic Plan, Wolf Ridge set the ambitious goal of developing and implementing a sustainable and long-term Facilities and Land Management Plan that reflects its core philosophy to model and teach a sustainable lifestyle.  This underlying tenet serves as the litmus test for all decision-making at Wolf Ridge, as reflected in the following goals:

  • Infrastructure and facilities improvements must incorporate new technologies to reduce environmental impact.
  • Existing and new systems must be monitored to ensure compliance with benchmarking standards set forth in Wolf Ridge’s Sustainable Action Plan.
  • The Land Management Plan must serve as a guide for future development on the 2,000-acre campus.
  • Environmental stewardship must be incorporated in all learning opportunities.

CR-BPS provided the following services to Wolf Ridge in the development of its Facilities and Land Management Plan:

  • Forensic Investigation of a Solar Photovoltaic System, including sub metering of the system for educational purposes.
  • Real-time benchmarking of energy use throughout the campus.
  • Facility & Site Asset Management (FSAM) for all Wolf Ridge facilities plus the 2,000-acre site. This FSAM provides Wolf Ridge with the data it needs to develop 20-year capital plans and budgets, evaluate the implications (e.g., conditions, energy, financial) of rehabilitating existing facilities vs. designing new, and promote long-term efficiencies throughout the organization.
  • Owner’s representative for the New Staff Building, Lake Superior Classroom site, Maintenance Facility, and Living Building Challenge Certification for the renovation of the Existing West Dorm.
  • Forensic Investigation for water intrusion and airtightness for the MAC Lodge.
